14.04.2016 – PAPHOS AND IT’S SURROUNDINGS

.

WE EAT MORNING BREKKIE AND WE GO TO THE ROYAL TOMBS CALLED SO, ALTHOUGH ONLY THE RULERS AND ARISTOCRATS – NOT THE KINGS – WERE BURIED HERE.

THE NECROPOLIS IS SITUATED ON A HIGH SLOPE WITH A BEAUTIFUL VIEW OF THE SEA. THE GRAVES ARE ACTUALLY CAVES. ROCK-HEWN ROOMS IN ROCKS. SOME VERY SIMPLE, OTHERS WITH COLUMNS, PLACES FOR FIRE, NICHES FOR CORPSES. I WONDER WHAT DECIDED ON SUCH A BEAUTIFUL LOCATION OF THIS CEMETERY. FAITH IN LIFE AFTER DEATH?, IN ETERNAL LIFE?, IN REDEMPTION? OR MAYBE THE RANK OF PEOPLE WHO WERE BURIED HERE?

WE ARE GOING FARTHER ALONG THE COAST TO THE CORAL BAY.

SHINING SUN, BLUE SKY AND THE SEA FORCED US TO STOP AT A ROCKY CLIFF, IN A PLACE CALLED SEA CAVES IN PEYIA (PEGIA). WE SAT LOOKING DOWN ON THE SEA BREEZE REFLECTING THE SUN. A VIEW LIKE FROM AN ADVERTISEMENT OR A POSTCARD.

GOING FURTHER WE FOUND OURSELVES IN PEYIA VILLAGE. IN CYPRUS IT IS CALLED PEGEIA. HERE YOU CAN SEE THE RUINS OF THE SETTLEMENT, THE BASILICA, THE PALACE. THE PLACE WAS ALREADY KNOWN TO THE EGYPTIANS FOR ITS LOCATION. ACROSS THE STREET IS THE SQUARE WITH THE CHURCH OF AGIOS GEORGIOS. FINE VIEW FROM THE ESCARPMENT. CLIMBING DOWN THE SLOPE A LITTLE LOWER ONE CAN SEE CAVES FORMING GRAVES.

THE PLACE IS POPULAR WITH TOURISTS. I’M NOT SURE IT DESERVING.

PAPHOS – A SMALL, VERY INTERESTING CHURCH AGIA PARASKEVI

.
ENJOYING THE REST OF THE DAY WE DROVE TO POLIS, LYING TO THE NORTH FROM PAPHOS. IT USED TO BE A PORT OF GREAT IMPORTANCE. NOW THERE ARE ONLY STONE BUILDINGS, COBBLED STREETS. AGREEABLY.

WE ARE SITTING IN THE OVERSHADOWED CHIX CHOX RESTAURANT AND WE ARE WATCHING THE SLEEPY AT THIS TIME OF THE DAY SMALL TOWN.
RUDA IS ENTERING THE JEWELLER’S SHOP. THE SALESWOMAN SHOWS HER A NUMBER OF ITEMS THAT IN TURN RUDA SHOWS US. SOME HAVE A VERY INTERESTING FORM. EVERYTHING IS GOING WELL UNTIL WE ASK FOR THE PRICE. IS SURPRISINGLY HIGH. TO CONSOLATION WE ORDER SHRIMPS WITH LETTUCE.

THE ROAD BACK AND FORTH IS VERY PLEASANT. WANDERING ALONG THE HILLS.

THE FAREWELL DINNER WE DECIDE TO EAT AT THE LAST FROM RECOMMENDED RESTAURANT LOCATED NEXT TO OUR HOTEL. IT’S CALLED ARGO.
RUDY HAVE VERY GOOD MOUSSAKA. I, CALAMARI. PIETRUSZKA SOME ANIMAL. WE ALSO ORDER SARDINES TO WHICH I HAVE RESERVATIONS ABOUT BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT ENOUGH GRILLED. ON TOP OF THIS AS ALWAYS CHIPS, LETTUCE. FOR DESSERT DELICIOUS BAKLAVA AND ICE CREAM. WE PAY, INCLUDING WINE € 77,80.

WE ARE CONSTANTLY WORKING ON OUR SHAPES AFTER GOOD FOOD, SO AS WELL THIS TIME AFTER DINNER WE WALK AROUND THE CITY. EVEN THOUGH IT IS AN APRIL ONE CAN ALREADY SEE A LOT OF MOVEMENT. IS MANY OPENED VENUES. LOUD. LOTS OF WALKERS LIKE US …
