02.08.2017 – CROWDED GDANSK

.

IN THE MORNING WE RACED AGAIN WITH TIME. WE HAVE BOUGHT ONLINE ADMISSION TICKETS, ENTITLING US TO ENTER THE MUSEUM OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR BETWEEN 10 a.m. AND 1 p.m. TOURING SHOULD LAST ABOUT 4 HOURS. THEN WE WILL HAVE MEETING OUR FAMILY AND SHOW THEM AROUND THE CENTRE OF GDANSK. WE HAVE AN APPOINTMENT AT 2:30 p.m.

AFTER 9 a.m. WE WERE AT THE SKM STATION, BUT OUR TRAIN DIDN’T COME. MORE AND MORE PEOPLE BEGAN TO GATHER. WAITING FOR THE TRAIN, WE TRIED TO BUY SENIOR TICKETS IN THE VENDING MACHINE AT THE STATION, BUT DESPITE THE HELP OF YOUNG PEOPLES, THE MACHINE DID NOT WANT TO SELL US DISCOUNTED TICKETS. WE COULD NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OTHER DISCOUNTS SIMILAR TO OURS, BECAUSE WE DID NOT HAVE THE APPROPRIATE IDS. PEOPLE WHO HELPED US SAID, THAT YOU CAN ALWAYS BUY TICKETS IN THE FIRST TRAIN CAR. DIRECTLY AT THE CONDUCTOR.

THE TRAIN WAS 40 MINUTES LATE. SOME BEGAN TO LEAVE THE STATION BECAUSE IT WAS NOT KNOWN WHEN SOMETHING WOULD COME.
FINALLY, THE TRAIN HAS ARRIVED.

IN ORDER TO GET TO THE MUSEUM FROM THE GDANSK MAIN STATION, ONE HAS TO WALK TO THE OLD TOWN AND THEN GET ANY STREET TO THE WATERFRONT. THEN TURN LEFT AND GO ALONG THE SHORE, PASSING THE DRAWBRIDGE ON THE RIGHT, TAKE THE WAPIENNICZY BRIDGE STRAIGHT TO THE DESTINATION. THE DISTANCE IS APPROXIMATELY 1.8 km.

THE BUILDING IS STYLIZED AS A BOMB DRIVEN INTO THE GROUND. VERY IMPRESSIVE.

THE MUSEUM IS HUGE. AFTER THE PASSAGE OF THE HALLS WITH THE EXHIBITS CONCERNING SOCIAL MOVEMENTS BEFORE WORLD WAR II, THE OUTBREAK OF WAR AND ITS COURSE, ONE ENTERS THE EXHIBITION ENTITLED TERROR AND THEN RESISTANCE. HERE THERE ARE MATERIALS ABOUT CONCENTRATION CAMPS, MASS EXECUTIONS, ROUND-UPS ON THE STREETS. IN TURN, RESISTANCE IS EVERYTHING THAT CONCERNS OPPOSING THE OCCUPANTS.

GDANSK – MUSEUM OF II WW

.

THE PLACE IS VERY INTERESTING. THE NUMBER OF EXHIBITS, DOCUMENTS, PHOTOGRAPHS – HUGE. IF ONE WANTS TO READ ALL THE DESCRIPTIONS, IT WOULD TAKE MUCH MORE THAN 4 HOURS. THE WHOLE IS INTERESTING, WELL DONE. THE DIORAMA, SHOWING A FRAGMENT OF THE CITY DESTROYED BY BOMBING WITH A TANK STANDING AMONG THE RUINS IS VERY SPECTACULAR. AS IN ALL MUSEUMS OF THIS TYPE, ONE NOT AVOIDED THE ILLEGIBLE MARKING OF THE DIRECTION OF SIGHTSEEING. THAT’S WHY YOU CAN ACCIDENTALLY SKIP SOME ROOMS OR FIND YOURSELF THE SECOND TIME IN THE SAME PLACE. HOWEVER IT IS A KNICK-KNACK, AND THE MUSEUM MUST BE SEEN.

AT 2:30 p.m., WE TURNED UP FOR THE APPOINTMENT AT THE FOUNTAIN OF NEPTUNE AT DLUGI TARG (LONG MARKET). AT THIS TIME ALL THE STREETS OF THE OLD TOWN AND THE QUAY WERE FULL OF PEOPLE. SEEM MASS EXODUS. SQUEEZING BETWEEN THE CROWD, STALLS, TABLES, CHAIRS WE REACHED SOME FISH AND CHIP SHOP AND WE SAT DOWN IN ORDER TO CONSUME SOMETHING. IN SUCH A CRUSH IT IS DIFFICULT TO ADMIRE THE STREETS OF THE OLD TOWN OR THE WATERFRONT HOUSES.

CONTINUING OUR WALK WE WENT TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER. WE CAME BACK ON THE SHIP SAILING REGULARLY THERE AND BACK ACROSS THE CHANNEL. THE RIDE COSTS PLN 2.50. LASTS ABOUT 7 MINUTES.

ANNUAL St. DOMINIC’S FAIR WAS JUST TAKING PLACE, AND WILLY-NILLY WE HAVE ENTERED BETWEEN HUNDREDS OF STALLS WITH CLOTHES, JEWELLERY, SPICES, SOUVENIRS, SHOES, HATS AND FOOD. AND THOUSANDS OF VIEWERS AND BUYERS, TOO.

BOYS DIDN’T REFUSE THEMSELVES A THICK SLICE OF BREAD WITH THE LARD AND THE CUCUMBER.
WHEN WE GOT TO SOPOT IT WAS EVENING. WE SAT WITH THE REST OF THE COMPANY IN OUR BEACH BAR. WHAT CAN I SAY? TRI-CITY IS FANTASTIC.
